about

Oscillate was commissioned by The Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA), and exhibited as part of SOUNDWORKS at ICA, London in 2011. It explores the overtone structure of the Sun through the sonification of helioseismological data. Stars oscillate at particular frequencies and these natural acoustic resonances can be observed as gentle oscillations on the surface of the star that can be measured. For Oscillate, I transposed and sonified helioseismological data, scaling it for the human ear in order to hear the strange and poetic tonal relationships that exist within the Sun.
